1. Social media was a saviour for stranded European travellers during the Iceland volcanic-ash cloud. In just seven days, there were over 55,000 mentions of the hashtag on Twitter and the usage was so widespread that only 5.8% of the tweets came from the Top 10 users.

2. Chatroulette, the Skype/ YouTube hybrid that randomly pairs users to chat online, was founded by Andrey Ternovskiy, a 17-year-old student who lives in Moscow.
